How we help in the Czech Republic

Diaconia ECCB had been helping in the CR since floods in 1997. Our Centre of Relief and Development, established by Diaconia, has continued to assist in emergencies since 2011.

Our help

Our volunteers go out to help people across the country in times of emergency, when a flood, tornado or other natural disaster strikes. Last time, we helped during the devastating floods in the Jeseníky region in September 2024. Our humanitarian team also includes crisis interventionists and psychosocial support providers.

We also work on prevention of emergencies. In the past, we have prepared municipalities and local communities how to prepare and respond in the event of a flood or drought.

Together with other Diaconia ECCB centres in the Czech Republic, we help refugees who has found safety and a home in the Czech Republic, especially after the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Volunteering

Our volunteers help in the Czech Republic during emergencies. They are continuously preparing to provide psychosocial assistance and crisis intervention or to map the damage and needs of the affected population.

Floods in the Czech Republic in 2024

In September 2024, heavy rain brought widespread flooding in the Czech Republic, especially in the Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions. Our first group of volunteers went to Jeseníky on 16th September. We focused our hep mainly in Česká Ves and Lipová-Lázně villages where we monitored the damage or provided psychological care to the affected residents. In November and December, thanks to generous donors, we were able to pay the first financial contribution of CZK 50,000 to households whose houses in the residential area were destroyed by water.

Municipalities Preparednes for emergencies

In recent years, thanks to the financial support of the German Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe and our experiences in flood and even tornado relief, we have prepared a prevention programme for municipalities to improve their preparedness for natural disasters.

Assistance to refugees

Together with other diaconal centres, we provide various services and support in finding employment, psychosocial assistance and other help to families with children, especially to Ukrainian refugees.
