Municipality preparedness for emergencies
Based on our experience in helping with the floods (since 1997) and even the tornado in 2021, we have developed the Resilient Municipality Prevention Programme for municipalities to improve their preparedness for natural disasters.
With the Resilient Municipality Prevention Programme, we have helped communities prevent natural disasters such as droughts and floods so that people in the Czech Republic can live well and safely.
The Programme included:
- mapping how the municipality’s leadership conceives of emergency preparedness by answering questions such as: Are the plans just on paper or are they based on practice? We survey the residents on what they know about preparedness;
- developing a plan for what and how to improve;
- encouraging local involvement, raising awareness and activating public debate;
- strengthening the capacity of municipal leadership through collaboration with experts, training, sharing good practices and know-how with other municipalities and ensuring their preparedness for natural disasters and other challenges posed by climate change;
- developing, in cooperation with young people, a manual on How to do preparedness awareness raising (pdf, in Czech) for municipalities with recommendations on how to do emergency awareness raising and how to communicate also in times of crisis with young adults.
15 Czech municipalities and towns have benefited from the Programme, which was financially supported by our long-standing partner, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe.
